A new Return to Work Programme has been successfully launched to support staff parents as they navigate the transition back into the workplace after a period of parental leave.
Designed with flexibility and wellbeing at its core, the programme combines in-person and online bitesize sessions to provide practical guidance, peer support and access to key university resources. It aims to ensure parents returning from leave feel informed, empowered and equipped to balance professional and family responsibilities from day one.
Participants receive a comprehensive introduction to the University Childcare Service, alongside essential HR policies, flexible working options and wellbeing support provisions. This initial foundation is complemented by a series of focused online sessions that address the real challenges faced by working parents.
Topics include selecting the right childcare, managing disrupted sleep patterns, easing the emotional and practical transition back to work and building sustainable wellbeing practices both at home and in the workplace. The sessions are designed not only to provide practical tools but also to create a supportive space where participants can share experiences and learn from one another.
Some of the participants provided their feedback:
“I thought it would be the practical advice, but actually the community feel of the session (hearing from others and feeling that the University is supporting my wellbeing) was the most valuable element of the session.”
“I found speaking to other parents very helpful and hearing about University childcare - especially the holiday provision. The wellbeing service was also an excellent introduction to a wide range of resources. I am really delighted this programme has been introduced; supporting parents, providing resources and encouraging a community of parents is really valuable.”
Through this initiative, returning parents gain the knowledge, confidence and support network needed to make their transition back to work as smooth and positive as possible - reinforcing the University’s dedication to supporting staff at every stage of their career and family life.
The programme begins again on 20 October 2026 with our in-person event at the Gurdon Institute. Book your place now.
